Meet Katie Choy, Author of Family Secrets Cookbook

Katie and I have known each other for several years now. Her three children and my daughter swim on the same swim team. Over the last couple of years or so, I’ve learned more about her. Let me tell you something… Katie is amazing! Read on!!

KatieAndMom

Tell us a little about yourself.
I was born and raised north of Pittsburgh in rural Western Pennsylvania. I moved to South Florida in 1994 to work as a travel nurse at the Jupiter Medical Center, where I met my husband Rogelio. In the short time I was here, he convinced me to marry him and make my home in Jupiter! We married in 1995, and in the next three years, had three beautiful babies. We have raised our children on the Loxahatchee River and have one cat, KitKat. Our oldest son has left the nest and made his home in the San Fransisco Bay Area as a computer programmer.

Why did you first decide to make a cookbook?
The idea to make the cookbook came about years ago. I loved my Mother-in-law’s food, and it was so different from what I had ever had. I used to watch her cook and write down the recipes. When the kids came along, I had no time, and it was put on hold. Once they were older, I started learning to cook from her again. I was collecting them purely for my own use, and one day my husband said, “You should publish this.” I sort of chuckled, but kept the idea in the back of my head.

Presenting Christine Najac, director of South Florida Food and Wine, with her copy. She also gave an amazing review quote for back cover.

How did you get started on the book? How long did it take from start to finish?
I can’t tell you the exact date I started the book, since I had been collecting recipes for a long time. I hit a lot of roadblocks along the way, and I am very busy with my family, so it was a long process. I would safely say that from when I took it seriously, until the book was actually published, has been at least 5-6 years.

What do you find most challenging about making the book?
The most challenging part of the book for me was actually submitting the work. I tend to feel things aren’t “good enough” and have high expectations. Letting go, and realizing it will never be perfect was my obstacle to overcome.

Presenting Mike Moir, owner of Food Shack and Leftovers, his copy. He gave an awesome review quote for back cover.

What is the most rewarding thing about the final project?
The most rewarding part of the final project is knowing I am helping to contribute to the medical care for the underserved people of Peru. A portion of the proceeds goes directly to the Peruvian American Medical Society providing clinics and medical mission trips in the remote regions. Peru educated my husband, and I want to give back.

Do you have a favorite recipe from the book?
My favorite recipe…that is so hard, because most every recipe is my favorite. Well…..except the beef tongue (that is my husband’s favorite)!

IMG_0364

Do you plan on doing a book tour?
I have no tour scheduled yet, but I would love to do a book tour!

What does your family think about the book?
My family loves the book. They better, because they were all a part of it. My husband and daughter did the photography, my oldest son created the iBook version, my younger son helped with the writing and editing, and my cousin did the professional editing. It was truly a family affair.

Where can we find out more about Family Secrets Peruvian-Chinese Cuisine?
You can learn more about Family Secrets at katiechoy.com. I am doing my own marketing and distribution and will ship anywhere in the U.S., or locals can contact me directly at katichoy@outlook.com. to get their signed copy.

Is there anything else you would like is to know?
I am fortunate enough to have wonderful friends who have hosted some book-signing parties in their home to help spread the word. I am planning on attending local events such as The Benjamin School’s Kid’s Corner holiday shopping and Harbourside’s Farmers market. After the holidays, I would like to start offering personalized cooking classes. I have an exciting event scheduled for April at the Oakland Park Culinary Art Showcase. I have a lot of ideas in the works. I have been asked to arrange culinary trips to Peru, and am in the process of working with a local travel agency to make this happen. We are scrambling to put the first one together for late February.

Thank you Katie, for sharing your story! Congratulations on this wonderful project!!

Meet Brooke Hartman of Sea Lustre Jewelry

The best part of doing these Local Super Women posts is reading how these lovely ladies are following their hearts and doing something that they really love. I am constantly amazed at how many local women are doing just that! This week’s feature is no exception. I’ve been following Brooke on Facebook & Instagram for awhile now, but had no idea what her story was. I’m so glad I get to share it with all of you. Meet Brooke!

Tell us a little about yourself.
Hi!  My name is Brooke Hartman, I am a born and raised Jupiter Florida Native (and never leaving!) I am recently married to my hubby of 7 months now, Eric. We don’t have any babies yet except for our chocolate lab Finn.

When did you start the Sea Lustre brand?
Sea Lustre Jewelry was born in the summer of 2013. I have worked in the jewelry industry for 10 years and graduated from the Gemological Institute of America in December of 2014. I have a passion for pearls (especially Tahitian) and designing. There is not anything sweeter than seeing a client walking around town sporting your very own jewelry line.

What do you find most challenging about running your own business?
The juggle. I recently left my 10 year career at Jupiter Jewelry to pursue my passion for Sea Lustre full-time. I want to give it everything I have inside of me. I am so lucky to have everyone (especially Eric) support me every step of the way. This is a crazy road but I wouldn’t want it any other way.

What do you do on your days off?
(ha!) A day off is rare. Especially with the Holiday’s fast approaching..but Eric & I love to travel!! Luckily for us, I get to travel with Sea Lustre, my favorite pearls come from the French Polynesian Islands. This past summer we visited the Island of Tahiti, where we hand chose the most beautiful pearls ever!! But, when we are not traveling to exotic islands..(just kidding) my day off consists of my pup, yoga, fishing, paddling with Eric. We have a pretty large family and love to spend time together.

How do you juggle work & family?
It is definitely hard sometimes to balance, but for me, I just have to remember to stop and breathe and know when to take a break.

Meet Kalia of Kalia Lily Photography

Today’s blog interview is close to my heart. I’ve know the lovely Kalia for a very long time. Way back in 2007 she was my daughter’s swim coach! Back then she split her time between the pool and the camera. These days she’s a full time photographer and does an amazing job! We’ve had her shoot all our family photos, and she recently shot my wedding. Her style is amazing and I will treasure our photos forever!  I was so happy when she agreed to do the interview and I’m very excited to introduce her to all of you.

Print

Tell us a little about yourself: Hi!  My name is Kalia.  I’m from Varna, Bulgaria.  It’s a city on the Black Sea.  (No Sharks in those waters!) My family moved from Bulgaria to Austria and then to Toronto, Canada.  I’m so thankful I was able to experience each place- really gave me a love for travel!   Eleven years ago we moved to South Florida.  I met my husband in West Palm Beach and now we have two boys-3 and 2 years old.  I’m really blessed to have my three men!

When did you first find your joy in photography? Years ago my dad shot film.  I loved looking through his photos over and over again.  While I loved everything “arts” related,  I  didn’t have a clue where my interests where leading.  Shortly after I got married my dad encouraged me to try Photoshop.  I would take pictures and then spend hours working on them.  It was just fun for me!  My mom looked at me one day and said “You love this.  You are up till 2am doing this!”  At that moment something clicked (cheesy pun intended).

1010968_10151556117089472_1927842796_n

When did you start the Kalia Lily brand? About 8 years ago.  I would grab friends and family and just take their pictures for free- just to build a portfolio.  The other components came after, with  a lot of late nights and a lot of learning.  The brand though is ever evolving.  I want to give people a consistent product, but also challenge myself and try new things.

What do you find most challenging about running your own business? I would say wearing all the different hats.  You aren’t just a photographer, you are a business.  It might seem like most of my time is spent taking pictures but that’s just a small part.  For example, tomorrow, a good part of my work day will be spent learning the new features on the latest version of a program.  And juggling work and family…but I’ll talk about that more in question 7 ☺

DSC_3757

What is the most rewarding thing about running your company?  It’s hard to name just one because I feel so blessed to have this job.  I get to meet amazing people and build lasting relationships with them!  Many times I have captured a young couple’s engagement session, and now years later, I’m taking pictures of their growing family.   Also, I’m really thankful for the freedom and flexibility!  And lastly, I’m thankful that running my company allows me to be an artist every single day.

What do you do on your days off?  I’m laughing out loud thinking about this because I always try to pack way too much into the day!  I want to go thrifting, I want to paint, I want to go on a date with my husband, take the kids to the beach, see a friend, read a book etc. I never get to everything of course, but taking the kids to the zoo or downtown for dessert has become a favorite of ours.

10410889_10152762963534472_4888569219766269986_n

How do you juggle work & family?  This is a daily struggle!  But here are a few things that help me.  For one, I really don’t believe you can “have it all”.  I might be able to have a little of everything, but to chase success in all areas of life, all at once,  just leaves me feeling like a big, stressed out loser.  Also, I decided years ago, that it didn’t matter if my definition of success looked different than other people’s.  It my definition, I have a lot of snuggle time with my boys!

Who is your favorite Superhero and why?  My mom!  She possesses so many qualities I aspire to!  I’m so thankful for her.  From spiritual wisdom, to selfless love, to discipline, to her amazing cooking…I could go on and on!

Where can we find Kalia Lily online?
www.kalialily.com and www.kalialily.com/blog and www.facebook.com/kalialilyphotography

Is there anything else you would like is to know?
Check out KLP online for some upcoming contests and to see our latest work!  This summer my family went to Europe and this trip has inspired me to write more personal posts as well 🙂

If you’re interested in getting family photos done for the holidays, I encourage you to get in touch with Kalia. She is so sweet and s professional. You will not be disappointed!

Meet Allison Albert of Domestic Artisans

HI friends! I’m really happy about bringing you today’s interview. Allison is a Tequesta local that does some really awesome things!! I’ve seen her posts on Facebook for awhile now and finally reached out to her to learn a little more about her & her business. She’s so nice and happily agreed. So, here you go!

11071469_888154214574870_1823259862331903273_n

1. Tell us a little about yourself.  Hi! My name is Allison Albert. Originally I am from Williamsport, Pennsylvania but I spent most of my adult years in Denver, CO. My family moved here to Jupiter (my hubby’s hometown) three years ago. My husband Acey and I have a daughter Julia, currently a dance major at Dreyfoos School of the Arts. We also have Tini and Kona small mixed breed pups.

2. When did you start the DOMESTIC ARTISANS brand and what are the services you offer?  I began Domestic Artisans soon after we relocated to Jupiter. I was eager to begin a new endeavor, which encompassed all of my passions and hobbies. Cooking, Baking, Childcare, Home Management, and Gardening. Domestic Artisans, LLC is the umbrella under which many things are created. And most recently much of my attention has been on Brooke Linn’s Bees.

11059492_906664429390515_2525434013466222728_n

3. How did Brooke Linns Bees get started?  Brooke Linn’s Bees is now a big part of Domestic Artisans and was born out of my little garden here at home. I have been growing loofah (Yes! They grow on a vine and extremely well in South Florida). I was amazed at how many bees the loofah’s big yellow flowers attracted. So I said, I’m going to start a beehive right here in my backyard! Now I have seven hives in four locations around Jupiter and Tequesta and we’re always looking for host families. We are treatment free apiary and we sell bees wax and unfiltered honey.

4. Who makes up the DOMESTIC ARTISANS crew?  Domestic Artisans and Brooke Linn’s Bees is run by myself with help from my husband, Dr. Acey Albert M.D. (Internist and Pediatrician) and Julia when she’s not dancing!

5. What do you find most challenging about running your own business?
The most challenging part of owning this business is keeping up with demands of the customers while remaining focused on the slower processes, somewhat old fashion and home grown processes that I base this business on and enjoy most.

6. What is the most rewarding thing about running your company?
I enjoy making things that people love and running into someone at Publix who refers to me as “the bee lady”! That is so fun and most rewarding for me.

2014-08-17 12.06.28

7. What do you do on your days off?
When I’m not working I’m paddling boarding, traveling or volunteering at my daughter’s school.

8. How do you juggle work & family?
Luckily my work is everything that I love and I’m lucky my family also loves what I do.

2014-04-13 15.39.17

9. Who is your favorite Superhero and why?
My super hero is my Mom. She’s about as super as they come. She raised five successful and happy kids, taught us all to cook and garden and really is the inspiration for starting Domestic Artisans. I’m trying to get her down to Jupiter to work with me.

10. Where can we find DOMESTIC ARTISANS online?
Domestic Artisans and Brooke Linn’s Bees can be found on Facebook @ www.facebook.com/Brookelinnsbees and www.facebook.com/domesticartisans

11. Is there anything else you would like is to know? I am super excited to announce that I have merged with Tequesta Coffee Lounge! We have so many exciting things coming to the neighborhood! Please follow our page to hear about new offerings as well as upcoming events! I can’t wait to see you all there beginning October 8th, 2015!

Meet The Ladies Of Chelley Co.

I can’t believe I’m still posting blog interviews about totally awesome, local business owners! You guys!! Our area is full of so many talented folks!! The ladies at Chelley Co. are a very dynamic duo!! I’ve been following them on instagram for awhile and am super excited that their company has just launched! Danielle Casey (Jupiter, Florida) Danni Mitchell (West Palm Beach, Florida)

DanielleAndDanni
The Chelley Co. Team

We both grew up in South Florida and aside from a few years spent here and there in other cities, states and countries we have always called South Florida home. No human babies yet, haha .. but Danielle has 1 cat and Danni has 4 cats! …and we absolutely adore each and every one of them! :))

cco_lifestyle_ccernik-24
Danni in the studio

2. When did you start the Chelley Co. brand and what are the services you offer?
Chelley Co. was established in 2014 as a stationery company. We have recently transitioned into a lifestyle brand & our carefully curated online shop (jewelry, home decor, paper goods, kids & woman apparel, accessories and gifts) will be launching in August 2015! The items in the shop have all been hand selected from artists/makers near and far that we have scouted out through social media and other online avenues.

Our philosophy is all about creating through collaboration within the community.

There are three components to Chelley Co.:

-#MadebyChelley (stationery and other paper goods that we create)

-Artists & Makers (we hand select talented artisans from near & far to feature on our website … and sell their products!)

-#ChelleyCollabs (we collaborate with artists and makers to create one of a kind products exclusively sold on ChelleyCo.com)

3. Who makes up the Chelley Co. crew?
Danielle Casey & Danni Mitchell

4. What do you find most challenging about running your own business?
For us, it’s distance! Danielle currently resides in Miami and New York while Danni in WPB — thankfully, technology allows us to work virtually pretty efficiently but it’s amazing what we accomplish together when we’re in the same room!

5. What is the most rewarding thing about running your company?
Two things.

1.) Giving opportunity to Artists & Makers. We have an internship program and have been able to have a handful of students from Palm Beach State College work side by side with us. Watching them learn and grow with us is not only rewarding but so inspiring!

2.) Getting the chance to collaborate with those we’ve always looked up to creatively! Nothing is cooler than checking your inbox on a Monday morning and receiving an email from someone you have adored on Instagram for what seems like ages wanting to work with you!

6. What do you do on your days off?
Unfortunately, there is no rest for the wicked. But on the off chance we get to squeeze in a few hours we usually spend them outdoors with our boyfriends, family and a bottle (or two) of wine.

7. How do you juggle work & family?
It can definitely be tough but we do the best we can to maintain a healthy balance. Letting the phone completely die in order to sit through a family dinner works great We definitely look forward to the day where we feel comfortable enough to take an entire weekend off!

closemonstera_Edit

4. What do you find most challenging about running your own business?
I think the answer is simple: Everything. Not the fact that any one task is too difficult, it’s just the fact that, between the two of us, we touch every corner of the business. From, the art itself, to packaging, to shipping, to finance, to PR, to marketing, to customer service – all while things continue to grow as well.

5. What is the most rewarding thing about running your company?
The most rewarding thing has been the response! We’ve been featured by Design*Sponge, A Beautiful Mess, and Luxe Magazine and have been building a solid group of supports on Instagram – @livingpattern. So much encouragement and positivity from fans will really put a smile on a girl’s face 🙂

paintingpalms_Edit

6. What do you do on your days off?
Chris and I don’t take many. We skip going out to focus on our dreams. Our friends must think we don’t like them anymore but that’s the price admission. The time we take away consists of trips to the mountain and being in nature. Even then, we are always scouting for more intricate and saturated definitions of what “Living Pattern” is.
