I’m excited to bring my lovely blog readers the first Jupiter Local blog interview of 2016! I met Lacey back in back in December at a local event. She is a super talented lady and I’m so happy she agreed to share her story on the blog!
Tell us a little about yourself. My name is Lacey Obry and we are new transplants to south Florida from New York. We have lived here in Florida for a year and a half now. I have two sweet girls named Léa ( 5 years old) and Zoé ( almost 3 years old).
When did you learn to work with leather/ When/How did you start the Pitchoun Designs brand? I started working with leather in the fall of 2013, when i started my business. i was a hairstylist and took off time after the birth of my second daughter. I noticed that there was a lack of small, minimal hair accessories for children and had trouble finding bows for my daughter. I decided to start making my own, after request from many people, i started my own line of accessories. Having a love for all things leather, i decided to try my hand at making accessories with leather, at that time there were no kids accessories i had come across made with leather. I am self taught and have tried my hand at different types of leather to find the perfect material for each style i design and i absolutely love working with leather. The name for my business was born from the word ‘Pitchoun’, a french term of endearment for a little one, influenced by my french husband and my love for everything french.
What do you find most challenging about running your own business? I find it most challenging finding the balance between work and life. I’m a bit of a workaholic, i have so many goals for my business, sometimes i have to slow myself down.. There is always something to be ordered, an email to be sent, promotional events and advertising, its endless running your own business, but i have to make myself take time off to enjoy life.
What is the most rewarding thing about running your company? The most rewarding thing about running my own business is seeing my accessories on my customers via social media, and seeing them worn global. i get so many darling photos from customers and recently received sweet notes from customers saying their daughter started in our headbands as a baby and now have grown into our hair clips. i want all my accessories to “grow up with your child”.
What do you do on your days off? On my days off, when i actually take a day off, I’m all about shopping, mani/pedis and brunch and coffee dates with my girlfriends or husband. Because i work so much running my own business, i need that time to unwind and catch up with my friends to talk about things other than my work.
How do you juggle work & family? When juggling work and family, I have learned work stops once I pick up my kids from school. Having my studio currently in my home, Its tricky knowing you have work that could be done just in the next room. We do homework and have playtime and bath time before dinner. In the evenings, I try not to be on my computer working, so i can spend time with my husband. You have to set those boundaries to make that time special with family.
Who is your favorite Superhero and why? I don’t really have any specific “superhero”, but I would say my super hero would be any “momprenuer” who has started their own business from scratch and who has built it into a successful business and who has maintained balance in family and life. There is something so empowering about owning your own business as both a women and mother, where your identity in not only found in your kids but in yourself and your own creativity.

Katie and I have known each other for several years now. Her three children and my daughter swim on the same swim team. Over the last couple of years or so, I’ve learned more about her. Let me tell you something… Katie is amazing! Read on!!
Tell us a little about yourself.
I was born and raised north of Pittsburgh in rural Western Pennsylvania. I moved to South Florida in 1994 to work as a travel nurse at the Jupiter Medical Center, where I met my husband Rogelio. In the short time I was here, he convinced me to marry him and make my home in Jupiter! We married in 1995, and in the next three years, had three beautiful babies. We have raised our children on the Loxahatchee River and have one cat, KitKat. Our oldest son has left the nest and made his home in the San Fransisco Bay Area as a computer programmer.
Why did you first decide to make a cookbook?
The idea to make the cookbook came about years ago. I loved my Mother-in-law’s food, and it was so different from what I had ever had. I used to watch her cook and write down the recipes. When the kids came along, I had no time, and it was put on hold. Once they were older, I started learning to cook from her again. I was collecting them purely for my own use, and one day my husband said, “You should publish this.” I sort of chuckled, but kept the idea in the back of my head.
How did you get started on the book? How long did it take from start to finish?
I can’t tell you the exact date I started the book, since I had been collecting recipes for a long time. I hit a lot of roadblocks along the way, and I am very busy with my family, so it was a long process. I would safely say that from when I took it seriously, until the book was actually published, has been at least 5-6 years.
What do you find most challenging about making the book?
The most challenging part of the book for me was actually submitting the work. I tend to feel things aren’t “good enough” and have high expectations. Letting go, and realizing it will never be perfect was my obstacle to overcome.
What is the most rewarding thing about the final project?
The most rewarding part of the final project is knowing I am helping to contribute to the medical care for the underserved people of Peru. A portion of the proceeds goes directly to the Peruvian American Medical Society providing clinics and medical mission trips in the remote regions. Peru educated my husband, and I want to give back.
Do you have a favorite recipe from the book?
My favorite recipe…that is so hard, because most every recipe is my favorite. Well…..except the beef tongue (that is my husband’s favorite)!
Do you plan on doing a book tour?
I have no tour scheduled yet, but I would love to do a book tour!
What does your family think about the book?
My family loves the book. They better, because they were all a part of it. My husband and daughter did the photography, my oldest son created the iBook version, my younger son helped with the writing and editing, and my cousin did the professional editing. It was truly a family affair.
Where can we find out more about Family Secrets Peruvian-Chinese Cuisine?
You can learn more about Family Secrets at katiechoy.com. I am doing my own marketing and distribution and will ship anywhere in the U.S., or locals can contact me directly at email@example.com. to get their signed copy.
Is there anything else you would like is to know?
I am fortunate enough to have wonderful friends who have hosted some book-signing parties in their home to help spread the word. I am planning on attending local events such as The Benjamin School’s Kid’s Corner holiday shopping and Harbourside’s Farmers market. After the holidays, I would like to start offering personalized cooking classes. I have an exciting event scheduled for April at the Oakland Park Culinary Art Showcase. I have a lot of ideas in the works. I have been asked to arrange culinary trips to Peru, and am in the process of working with a local travel agency to make this happen. We are scrambling to put the first one together for late February.
Thank you Katie, for sharing your story! Congratulations on this wonderful project!!

Living in South Florida has a lot of perks. One perk is being able to get out & about, all year long. So, let’s talk about what to do in Northern Palm Beach County when you’re in the mood for a date night. My husband and I like to get out and enjoy as much as we can. Here are a few of our favorite, local spots.
It’s all about the romance when you stroll Jupiter, Florida’s approx 3.4 miles of gorgeous beaches. I recommend hitting up the Juno Beach Pier and any one of the beautiful beach access points along Beach Road. You can even bring Fido, if you stroll on the Dog Beach!
Work up a thirst with all that beach strolling? No worries, you’ve got LOTS of options! One of our favorite spots to grab a beer and sit by the water is The Square Grouper. You can see the lighthouse and the inlet. You can’t beat that view! Across the street on the intracoastal side is Guanabanas. A tropical landscaped restaurant and watering hole. Sit back under the large banyan trees and watch the paddle boarders go by!
New to the area is Harbourside Place. Located on Jupiter’s Riverwalk, Harbourside offers a variety of restaurants, shops, a farmer’s market and plenty of live music and events. No matter what the day, there’s plenty to do! Be sure to check out Tiger Woods’ new place The Woods (try the cotton candy, it’s on the dessert menu), and Calaveras Cantina, who offer the coldest beers I’ve ever had!
Maybe the outdoors isn’t your thing every night. Then give the new Cinépolis Jupiter | Movie Theaters a try. They have comfy seats that you can snuggle with your honey, seat side service and a full menu! It’s a fabulous way to see that new blockbuster you’ve been looking forward to!
If a beautiful hotel room is more your speed, Jupiter has two, gorgeous choices. Relax beach side at the Jupiter Beach Resort & Spa. With a secluded beach and full service spa, Jupiter Beach Resort is the perfect place to unwind in paradise!
Just down the street, enjoy “laid-back luxury and modern elegance” on the bank of Jupiter’s Intracoastal Waterway, at the Wyndham Grand Jupiter at Harbourside Place.
All these ideas are nice, but maybe just maybe, staying on the couch sounds perfect for you. That’s cool, pick out your favorite flick and call up the Chow Cab! Lucky us, Jupiter now has an awesome delivery service that hits up all the great restaurants we have around here! I suggest, Love Actually and food from Leftover’s Cafe!
Jupiter, Florida has so many more options that I didn’t mention. What are your favorite North Palm Beach County date night spots? No matter where you end up, enjoy your weekend, friends! ❤️ Nicole
