Jupiter Creamery

The Jupiter Creamery is a family run dairy farm in Jupiter Farms, Florida.

First of all, who can resist the face of an adorable dairy cow? Not me! Secondly, this hard working family makes it easy for the public to get milk, locally. Read the blog to learn more about their awesome adventure and make sure to save the date for one of their Cow Washes!

Jupiter Creamery Cows

Tell us a little about yourself.

My name is Suzie, I live in Jupiter Farms with my everlastingly patient and supportive husband, Rodney. We have two children, a brutally honest four year old girl and a naked outdoor enthusiast two year old son. I grew up in Pennsylvania. My Grandfather John Bartram was a long time family Orchard grower. But due to a heart attack and having five daughters and no sons the family farm had to be sold to developers, and was just a suburb when I grew up. My husband and I moved from Australia, where he grew up, to Jupiter farms in 2003. But we did not start farming until 2008.

Jupiter Creamery Logo

When and why did you start the Jupiter Creamery?

We started first with chickens, ducks and turkeys, moved up to pigs and then beef cows. It was not until I was pregnant with our daughter did I think about how much milk we drink. I knew I was going to need a milk cow or two! So I asked a farmer friend of mine on how to get a quality animal. Good advice was to buy an older cow and she will teach me how to milk. True to form, my old gal cow did break me in as easily as she could. At first I was overwhelmed but every day it got easier. But what do you do with four gallons a milk a day? So that led to again leaning on my friend to tell me how to legally sell raw milk in Florida and how to join organizations like the Farm to Consumer Legal Defense Fund. So shortly after Jupiter Creamery was formed.

For those unfamiliar with the RAW lifestyle, what are the benefits of raw milk?

Legally hard to answer this one because under Florida law raw milk is not for human consumption. Most of my research was with the Weston A. Price Foundation and the Campaign for Real Milk.

Jupiter Creamery Family Photo

Who makes up the Jupiter Creamery crew?

Right now I milk three cows every morning. The calves get the rest of the milk, straight from their mothers during the day. I have a few friends that have helped so we can go on holiday every once and a while. And of course my friends that took over milking while I gave birth to our son are amazing and I can not thank them enough!

What do you find most challenging about running your own business?

I never approached Jupiter Creamery as a for profit business, its definitely an avocation. Right now I use the sales from milk to pay for the supplemental feed of our animals and maintenance of our fences and irrigation. Having a grass fed dairy I am also focusing on improving our pasture, and also maximizing productivity utilizing intensive rotational grazing. We do not use any chemical fertilizers or herbicides on any of our pasture.

What is the most rewarding thing about running your company?

Right now the most rewarding part of having cows is to watch my children interact with them, feeding a calf a bottle or getting a rough cow tongue “kiss” after a brush or a hand feed.

What do you do on your days off?

Days off are spent at the beach or playing soccer. Hanging out with friends and their kids.

How do you juggle work & family?

I could not do what I am doing without the support of my husband. He makes breakfast and entertains kids while I milk, he maintains all the equipment and is always there to help. When I need to change or improve pastures or milking procedures.

Where can we find The Jupiter Creamery online?

I have a Facebook page Jupiter Creamery. I try to put photos and what milk products I have available on the Facebook page. Also upcoming events to wash or feed the cows. Save The Date | November 5th | Pumpkin Feeding: Open Farm! Come and feed the cows and pigs your Halloween pumpkins. Swing by all day with any hay or pumpkins to pet and hand feed the cows.

Thank you for sharing your story and your images, Suzie!

Go Coastal Local Artist Florida Prints

Tell us a little about yourself

Melissa Rinaldi, originally from Kentucky, grew up in the arts and crafts capital of that state, Berea. I was home schooled until high school and I believe that schooling helped foster my creativity. I have been an artist most of my life in some form. I moved to Florida for College in 2000, and have lived in Florida ever since then (except for a brief year in PA). I have been in Jupiter 3 years and have been an artist professionally for about 2 years. I have three children (6,4 and 1) and one dog.

Go Coastal Kids

When did you start the Go Coastal brand and what are the products you offer?

Go Coastal Brand was started last year January 2016. I offer custom artwork, fine art prints and other home decor and clothing items, with designs made from my hand painted work on it.

Where do you get your inspiration for new designs?

Inspiration in Jupiter and Palm Beach County isn’t hard to find. I find much inspiration from nature, as the majority of my work is Coastal related. I also have active followers on social media in which I interact with and get ideas from.

Go Coastal Painted Surfboards

What do you find most challenging about running your own business?

Finding time to do all the paper work, while still leaving time to create, is very challenging.

What is the most rewarding thing about running your company?

My flexible schedule is very rewarding with small children. Making the world brighter with my artwork is the best thing about what I do.

Go Coastal Melissa

How do you juggle work & family?

Luckily, with artwork, I can do it at any hour and on and off throughout the day. I have time to commit to family events, care for my one year old and juggle pick up schedules for the preschooler and 1st grader.

Hurricane Season Funtimes

Wow, Irma was intense!

As we enjoy our first week of normalcy, after that whole Irma incident, we’ve got Jose, Maria and Lee hanging out in the Atlantic Ocean. You guys remember 2004, right? Do the names Charlie, Francis, Ivan and Jean ring any bells? Let’s hope 2017 isn’t a repeat of 2004! So many hurricane Season funtimes to remember! (queue major eyeroll)

2017 Hurricane Names List

There’s really no need to panic. If you’re from Florida, you realize that even though the Official Hurricane Season is from June 1st – November 1st, it doesn’t really get interesting until September-ish. With that said, I’d like to give you guys a list of things you may want to consider.

Features you want to look for when shopping for a new home/ or updating your current home:

  1. Does the home have impact glass windows and garage door and/or a full set of hurricane shutters? Not only is this an investment that will keep you safe, you can also get discounts on your homeowners insurance! Win, win!
  2. Is there lots of big trees on the property? Are you prepared to keep up the landscaping on your own or will you hire a landscaping company? It’s important to keep your landscape safe by having your trees pruned regularly and keep dead branches cut.
  3. Does the home have Gutters and Downspouts? They should always be clean, especially during a storm. Blockages in these drainage systems can cause the water to back up onto your roof and into your attic, causing a lot of damage.
  4. I need to say something about the roofs here. Miami Dade building codes and what to do if the home was built before 1997.
  5. Is the home located in an evacuation area? Most homes on waterways and in low lying areas are. Be prepared to leave, and have to stay gone until the area is deemed safe again, by county officials.

Things to keep stocked, during hurricane season and year round:

  1. Water. I can’t stress enough about having water on hand during and after a bad hurricane. The suggested amount is a gallon per person, per day, for seven days. If you accumulate this over the winter months, you won’t have to worry about the stress that comes with trying to find water right before the storm hits.
  2. It is suggested that you keep at least a three-day supply of items such as candles, batteries, and foods that don’t require refrigeration. (Also, try not to eat all your hurricane snacks before the storm, like my family did. Ha!)
  3. You may be out of power for days or even weeks after a hurricane. Owning a generator can be very comforting when the power is out. There are all different types, from a whole house generator to a small generator that can run the fridge and a few fans. This is another purchase that would be better made before hurricane season. Once everyone knows a large storm is coming, generators sell out quickly! Be sure to do your homework, and get the one that’s best for you.
  4. A battery powered or hand crank radio is also a good item to have on hand, if the power goes out. It can help you stay up to date on whats happening throughout the storm.
