Meet Alexandra Gioia – Maker

This post was originally posted HERE on June 9, 2015

I have had a crush on all things druzy for quite sometime now. Druzy jewelry is some of my favorite baubles that I own. It’s just so pretty! Enter Alexandra, designer extraordinaire! She makes the loveliest pieces and I basically want them all! I contacted her recently to do an interview and was so excited when she agreed! Just be warned, after you read this and see the photos, you’re going to “need” a few of her pieces!

1. Tell us a little about yourself.

Hi! I’m Alexandra but you can call me Allie, everyone has since Preschool. I was born and raised in Miami but have called Jupiter, FL home for the past 15 years. The laid back lifestyle is much more me and feel so lucky to pass by the Jupiter Lighthouse everyday on my way home!
2. When did you start the Alexandra Gioia brand?
I have been designing jewelry for a year and a half and it has quickly become a passion of mine. Not only do I love designing but I love the marketing side of it too. I have connected with so many talented, like minded people through social media platforms like Instagram.
IMG_4541
3. Who makes up the Alexandra Gioia crew?
I design, create, shoot and market the line but I do have the occasional help from my very supportive husband. I’m constantly asking him to take pictures of my bracelets like this, with that background, with this outfit. He’s a good sport 98% of the time.
IMG_4083

4. What do you find most challenging about running your own business?
It’s most definitely a challenge. I work full-time so I play jewelry designer by morning, night and weekends. It’s really a dream so I can’t complain.
5. What is the most rewarding thing about running your company?
Coming across photos of girls wearing my jewelry is insane! I love seeing how others style my pieces. They inspire me to accessorize in ways I hadn’t thought of. Also, hearing stories of why customers are buying a particular piece is really special. It’s made me want to buy more “just because” gifts for others like my customers do.
IMG_4992
6. What do you do on your days off?
My husband and I bought the fixer upper of our neighborhood so it seems our second home is Home Depot as of late. When we’re not renovating I do enjoy relaxing on the beach (with spf 75+) and trying out new local restaurants. Our friends refer to us as the “food snobs”. Pretty sure that’s not a compliment. Ha!
IMG_4957
7. How do you juggle work & family?
My family is so special to me and I’m lucky enough to have them nearby so I always try to make time for them.
IMG_5254
8. Who is your favorite Superhero and why?
Wonder Woman because of her great taste in accessories. Those gold cuffs are on point!
IMG_4825

10. Is there anything else you would like is to know? Upcoming events, etc.
The pronunciation of my middle name is tricky, Gioia. Like Joy-uh. With no boys in the family to carry on the Gioia name, I decided I would with the launch of my line. It’s really fun hearing the variety of ways people say it.

Meet Halle Frey of Flower & Fringe

This post was originally posted HERE on May 26, 2015

I found Halle on one of my many Instagram sessions. These mostly consist of me clicking on everything that looks interesting on Instagram! Halle’s images have beautiful floral arrangements and flower crowns…what’s not to love about that!? So, I reached out to her and she happily agreed to do an interview for the blog! So without further ado, I introduce to you, Halle Frey of Flower & Fringe!photo-48 copy 2

1. Tell us a little about yourself.

My Name is Halle Frey I was born and raised in Erie, PA. Took a big leap of faith and moved to WPB, Fl to attend college at Palm Beach Atlantic University. Did not know a soul here but as soon as I planted my feet I realized I was in the right place. Graduated in 2005 with a degree in Marketing and have been pursuing different dreams since. After many moves to different states and many many different jobs I am now calling West Palm home again.

I have a cute pup named Daisy Mae, which she came with her name. I thought it was appropriate since I love flowers. She’s a sweet rescue dog and looks like a mini golden retriever. No kids yet but a very handsome boyfriend, Matt, who I adore.

2. When did you start the Flower & Fringe brand and what are the services you offer?

Flower & Fringe has been a dream of mine since I was younger. My Aunt Karen had a flower shop when I was growing up in PA and she taught me everything I know. She’s crazy talented with flowers. It has always been a love of mine, one that I never thought I would really make into a business of my own. I started F&F a year and a half ago. I was just testing the waters for the first year, only doing it part-time. As of April 2015 I have decided to go full force with my business and now have a flower workshop located in Uptown Art’s West Palm Beach location. The focus for F&F is to create a unique floral experience for small intimate events, holiday gatherings and weddings. We also offer floral design workshops and the occasional whimsical bouquet to go. Attention to detail is very important with each bouquet, centerpiece or flower crown keeping to its organic look.

bridesmaid 23. Who makes up the Flower & Fringe crew?

Right now the F&F crew is just me with the occasional help of a willing friend or family member. My parents have been a huge support through this whole process.
halleflorals-354. What do you find most challenging about running your own business? What is the most rewarding thing about running your company?

Well as most business owners know there are good days and bad days, ups and downs. With owning my own business the thing I appreciate the most is being able to be creative and build something from the ground up. It has challenged me and grown me but you never know if you can accomplish something unless you try.

shea 55. Who is your favorite Superhero and why?

My superheros have always been both of my parents. I have seen my own father run his business and go through the highs and lows of it all, always supporting his family and being steadfast through different stages of life. My mom because she just graduated from college with a degree in Occupational Therapy Assistant. I don’t know how she did it but she did and it is a great reminder that its never too late.
photo 2-3 copy 26. Where can we find Flower & Fringe online?

You can find F&F on instagram and Facebook. The website is http://www.flowerandfringe.com

altar7. Is there anything else you would like is to know? Upcoming events, etc.

Most of my workshops are posted on Uptown Arts West Palm Beach location Calendar.

Thank you for sharing with us, Halle! We love hearing about women business owners in area! I really want to have one of your Private Flower Parties…flower crowns for everyone! Who’s with me??

Meet Lauren & Anna, from Urban Vintage Rentals

This post was originally posted HERE on Tuesday May 12th, 2015.

I “met” Lauren & Anna through instagram and Facebook. We have common online connections. I was in awe at their product photos for their business. It looks like they have a LOT of fun! So, I asked and they graciously agreed to do an interview for the blog. Yea! Warning: After reading this post you’re going to want to host a party, just so you can hire Lauren & Anna to stylize it!

View More: http://jessicabordnerphotography.pass.us/urbanvintagerentals1. Tell us a little about yourselves.

I’m Anna – I’m actually from Florida! I was born at Palm Beach Gardens hospital (almost!) 30 years ago 😉 I have two human babies – one girl named Harlee Faye, who is one, and a baby boy named Declan, who should arrive any day now! Our furry babies are Gypsy Lou (an adopted pit bull, who is my first baby) and Avery Jade (a spoiled miniature beagle). They make the best of friends and are great with our human babies!

I’m Lauren and I’m also a Florida native! I was born in Miami where I spent most of my childhood. In my teens my parents decided to move to Hobe Sound after falling in love with the sleepy little beach town. I have one fur baby, her name is Lola. She’s a rescued Cattle Dog or Blue Heeler. It took a few years of convincing for my husband to even warm up to the idea of getting a dog.. let alone a high energy herding dog.

After I Do-02212. When did you start the Urban Vintage brand?

We started it almost a year ago when Lauren decided it was time to quit the corporate world. We joined forces (and by forces, I mean, our hoard of random vintage stuff + our love of vintage shopping and styling) to do a couple styled shoots, we started a website, reached out to some amazing vendors and people in the industry, and we’ve been building ever since!

3. Who makes up the Urban Vintage crew?

Besides Lauren and I, our husbands! And our sisters and brothers, and whoever else we’ve managed to con into helping us move furniture for beer 🙂

View More: http://jessicabordnerphotography.pass.us/oakhillfarmvenue4. What do you find most challenging about running your own business?

Anna: Working too much. I could stay up for hours at night tweaking the website, coming up with new ideas, reaching out to the right clients and vendors – but I have to remember to keep that family/work/life balance. Otherwise, what’s the point of working so much if you can’t enjoy the fruits of your labor?

Lauren: Sometimes my mind can get all over the place.  I think setting a work schedule and making sure you stick to it is essential.

5. What is the most rewarding thing about running your company?

Anna: Seeing pictures like this.

View More: http://jessicabordnerphotography.pass.us/frezzaweddingLauren: I’m with Anna on this!  We’ve also met some amazing people in the industry. Feels really good to have that kind of support!  I also feel blessed to be doing what I love.
6. What do you do on your days off?

Anna: haha. days off? Boat days are my favorite days off.

Lauren: These days I feel like they have been spent trying to organize our growing inventory! Anna is really awesome at organizing I try to learn from her. Being outside, boating, kayaking, family time, being creative.

7. How do you juggle work & family?

By having an awesome support system – living near family has its benefits!

View More: http://jessicabordnerphotography.pass.us/harleefaye8. Who is your favorite Superhero and why?

Anna: I’ll leave this one to Lauren. She’s the one who wears superhero clothes. For me, anyone moms who can provide for their family, enjoy their career, and still get to spend quality time with their husband and children are rockstars in my book.

Lauren: I wanted to be Batman as a kid (Michael Keaton Batman).  I would literally play in my back yard and pretend I was I was Batman (oh and I was an only child so my imagination pretty awesome). I’ve been Batman for Halloween a few times.  I’m sort of a movie nerd. I love Michael Keaton Batman. Tim Burton has always been one of my favorite directors too.
After I Do-02159. Where can we find Urban Vintage online?

Visit them online at: Urban Vintage Rentals, instagram, and Facebook.

Are you thinking of buying, selling or moving in the Northern Palm Beach County area? Interested in how much your current home is worth? Just let me know, I’m happy to help!

Meet Carin – Artist at Carin Wagner Fine Art

This post was originally posted HERE on Tuesday, April 21, 2015

Today’s blog interview is with Carin Wagner, a local artist in our area. I met Carin several years ago when I worked at a local Fine Art Printer. She paints really beautiful, really big landscape pieces that will take your breath away! She was always one of our sweetest clients and so easy to work with. I contacted her a few weeks ago and she generously agreed to give me an interview. So, meet Carin!

12 Partially Obscured

1. Tell us a little about yourself.

South Florida has been my home since I was 11 years old. I am lucky enough to have a husband, 3 children, aged 14, 15 and 18 and 3 pets. Two cats chose us to be their caregivers and a bunny rabbit hopped into our hearts 10 years ago.

2. When did you first have an interest in art?

When I was in kindergarten our teacher assigned us a self portrait. When it was complete, she took mine and showed it to the other teachers and gave it high praise. Being one of six children, praise was rare- so I was thrilled to be noticed!

01 Shelter SS

3. How did you get started in the “Art for a living” field? How long have you been in the biz?

After a childhood spent dreaming of paintings, I went to school for advertising design, hoping for a stable source of income. After a few years in the field, I was offered a mural job at what was then Pier 66 hotel and Marina. From there, a yacht brokerage firm commissioned me. In excitement, I quit my day job! There have been some awesome ups and downs( not just on ladders and scaffolds). I have been painting for a living since 1988.

4. What do you find most challenging about running your own business?

The most challenging part of the business for me is the marketing component. Most artists just want to create, and I am no exception. If you don’t attend to the sales aspect, you end up with a lot of art to dust and very little to eat!

06 Everything SS-1

5. What is the most rewarding thing about running your company?

There are at least two incredibly rewarding things about my work. The first is the sense of accomplishment when I have turned a visual dream into an actual piece of art- some of my paintings take 6 months to complete. The second is when someone who has purchased my work or viewed it, tells me that it evoked a particular emotion, or reminds them of a lovely place. When someone who has purchased my work sends me a photo of the art, in a place of pride in their home and then tells me how peaceful it makes them feel, it makes me incredibly glad!

6. What do you do on your days off?

As a mom, you rarely get a full day off, but I love to get out in nature, gardening, hiking, biking, and kayaking all make me very happy.

7. How do you juggle work & family?

Juggling a family and a career is a challenge. There is a certain level of guilt- no matter which one you are attending to-you worry about neglecting the other! Our time with our children is really short though, so I am just happy to be in this crazy, busy time!

Yosemite Nikon 341-1

8. Who is your favorite Superhero and why?

My favorite superhero is Elastigirl (The Incredibles). I would love to be able to stretch that far and turn myself into a living parachute that holds my family and keeps them from harm!

9. Where can we find You and your artwork online?

You can find me at Carin Wagner Gallery or on Facebook. My work is at RosettaStone Gallery and M&M Studios in Jupiter and will be at the Cultural Council in Lake Worth over the summer.

Thank you for sharing with us, Carin! Your work is lovely!!

Tequesta and Jupiter both have many small businesses that make living here great! If you’d like to know more info on how you can move to our area, contact me! Myself and the rest of the Sean Underwood Real Estate Team would LOVE to help you find the perfect home in Jupiter or Tequesta!

Thanks for reading the blog, friends!! Let me know how you like the interviews and if you have any suggestions on who to interview next, please feel free to nominate them!

Meet Kelly, Owner of Unhinged Boutique

This post was originally posted HERE on April 14th, 2015

So I discovered Unhinged Boutique on Instagram. Kelly liked one of my photos so, I checked out her profile. That’s when I discovered her shop! I visited out her website and found out she’s doing REALLY awesome things.

frontofbusinesscard1

 1. Tell us a little about yourself.  Kelly Rothrock the owner of Unhinged Boutique and I grew up in a small town outside of St. Louis, Missouri.  The town I lived in was Fults, IL and consisted of 26 people.  I was your simple Midwest girl living on 18 acres with my pet chickens, bunnies and dogs.   I moved to St. Louis when I turned 18 and later met my now husband there. Once we got engaged I packed up everything I had in my car and moved to North Palm Beach. My husband and I recently purchased a home in Jupiter and after living in Florida for 3 years now, I cannot image living anywhere else. We are eager to grow our family soon, and are getting our first dog together next week.

2. When did you start the Unhinged Boutique brand?
I decided to start Unhinged Boutique because I wanted to do something I was passionate about while making a difference.  I had lost my mother from breast cancer that later turned into brain cancer back in 2013. Once profitable I will be giving back 5% of the profits to cancer research. I wanted the Unhinged Boutique brand to be different than what you usually find in South Florida. I use the term “Unique Simplicity” because all of Unhinged Boutiques clothing is simple and under stated. The jewelry is a mix of natural stones and druzys.  You won’t find palazzo pants or bold prints here!

3. Who makes up the Unhinged Boutique crew?

Me, myself and I. Running a boutique on a website helps me keep my cost down because it’s just me.  I am not paying rent for a retail space or paying someone an hourly wage to come in on Saturday because I want the day off. I am the one modeling the clothes, tracking the inventory and shipping the packages. There is no closing time because I have people purchasing items all hours of the night.  It is pretty much a one man band except for the help of my husband who is the photographer in training. I like to joke that our fur baby Cooper, a Golden Retriever will be in charge of the inventory. I doubt this is an option is his training, but look out because he may appear in a few of our product photos.

4. What do you find most challenging about running your own business?

The most challenging part of running Unhinged Boutique is photographing the clothes! It looks like a lot of fun, but taking pictures can be pretty time consuming.  I do not lay the clothing on the floor or set up an outfit on a mannequin. With being and online boutique it is important to show all the clothing on a real person, to give you the best idea of how it will fit.  A typical “photo shoot” from set up to take down takes us between 3-5 hours.

5. What is the most rewarding thing about running your company?

I enjoy being my own boss. I feel proud to show people my website, and knowing what I am doing is a positive thing.  Seeing my customers’ happy and hearing people’s survivor stories makes it all worth it for me.  You get what you put into it, and even though I am the new girl in this industry I already see the work I have put into my business already paying off.

007
Kelly Rothrock the owner of Unhinged Boutique

6. What do you do on your days off?

My husband and I enjoy renovating and home décor.  The work never ends at our house! If we are not painting, landscaping or hauling furniture then you can usually find us at Homegoods.

7. How do you juggle work & family?

Since we do not have kids, it is not that hard to juggle work and family.  My husband and I dedicate ourselves to our work. But we both know when it’s time to shut off work and have “us” time.  He travels A LOT, so when he’s home I will try to schedule my Unhinged Boutique parties on certain nights so I’m not gone sporadically in the evenings.

8. Who is your favorite Superhero and why?

My mother will always be my hero.  I remember growing up she decided she was going to start building homes.  She then built 6 custom homes after the flood of Valmeyer in 1993.  In 1996 she started up another business taking care of senior citizens in their home.  Her joy for caring for others brought her to becoming a nanny until she passed away at 63. She achieved whatever she set her mind to, and for that she will always be my hero.

9. Where can we find Unhinged Boutique online?

Unhinged Boutique is an online only boutique and can be found on most social media sites.  I try to post an #OOTD everyday on Instagram.   On the website we also feature a blog that will give you an inside scoop on myself, the trade shows I attend and ways we are giving back to help the fight against cancer.

You can find us online at:

Email to arrange a shopping party or arrange pickup at unhingedboutique@gmail.com

10. Is there anything else you would like is to know? Upcoming events, etc.

We love to do shopping parties! I also have a collapsible rolling rack that travels to my event locations in Palm Beach County. We have a lot of shopping parties coming up in the month of April and quickly filling up for May.  If you would like to arrange a party, please email in advance because space is limited.

I also have a promo code to cancel the shipping charge on the website, giving local customers the option to meet up in the area to collect their merchandise rather than have it shipped to their home. If you see a car driving around with “Unhinged Boutique” magnets on the door we are usually making a delivery so just give me a wave. ☺

Thank you for sharing with us, Kelly! We love hearing about women business owners in our area!

Tequesta and Jupiter both have many small businesses that make living here great! If you’d like to know more info on how you can move to our area, contact me! Myself and the rest of the Sean Underwood Real Estate Team would LOVE to help you find the perfect home in Jupiter or Tequesta!

Meet Jeni, of Doulas of the Palm Beaches

I’m really excited to introduce you all to Jeni Johnson. I met Jeni through The Jupiter Dragons Swim Team, where both our daughters swim. I didn’t realize until very recently what Jeni did for a living. So, I contacted her about doing a blog interview and she agreed. Read on to see what’s she has been up to!

1. Tell us a little about yourself: I grew up on Virginia and moved to Florida in High School. I graduated from The University of Florida with a degree in Elementary Education. After graduation I became a flight attendant for American Airlines. I was a flight attendant for 18 years and then became a birth doula.

2. What is a Doula? A birth doula is someone who offers professional support to women during pregnancy, labor and postpartum.

3. How did you get started in the Doula field? How long have you been in the biz? I became a certified birth doula from DONA International in 2004. My doula partner and I started our company, Doulas of the Palm Beaches, LLC in 2005.

4. What do you find most challenging about running your own business? Trusting others to do a job. Tina (my business partner) and I have to trust the people that work for us completely. Our business is a very personal business and we want only the very best for our clients.

5. What is the most rewarding thing about running your company? Our business is full of rewards. The best, seeing a mom hold her baby for the very first time.

Screen Shot 2015-06-22 at 12.08.44 PM

6. What do you do on your days off? I love to go to the beach, see a movie or find a new wonderful restaurant.

7. How do you juggle work & family? Fortunately my children are in high school and college so they completely understand if I’m at a birth. I really try to schedule everything work related around their schedules. A birth is one thing I can’t schedule, that’s why I try and limit the number of births each month to 3.

8. Who is your favorite Superhero and why? All of my clients in labor are my superheroes. Women are so strong, emotionally and physically.

9. Where can we find Duolas of The Palm Beaches online? Visit Doulas of The Palm Beaches online. Please also “like” us on Facebook and “follow” us on Instagram. Both under Doulas of the Palm Beaches

10. Is there anything else you would like is to know? Upcoming events, etc. We have so many events happening at DOTPB. Please visit or website for all events

Thank you, Jeni, for sharing with us! We love seeing small business owners doing well in Jupiter, Florida!

Meet Caitlin, of Maggie & Mae Boutique

I am super excited to introduce you all to Caitlin Farrelly Bartlett, owner of Maggie & Mae!

IMG_2207

I contacted Caitlin about doing the interview, because my daughter & I LOVE her shop! We’ve purchase a few little goodies there and love her selection of beautiful things. She kindly agreed to answer some questions for the blog, so without further adieu, meet Caitlin!

1. Tell us a little about yourself: Caitlin Farrelly Bartlett, from Jupiter, Fl…Lived here since the 4th grade, split my time between Jupiter and Nantucket Island, MA after college. Moved to Jupiter permanently about one year ago. I’ve recruited my husband to be a Jupiter boy, he’s originally from North Conway New Hampshire.

My husband Justin and I have been married four years, we hope to start a family soon.

I have a dog, a Chihuahua, Mr. Patches. He is 11 years old, and is my most loyal companion. He comes to M&M every day, and hangs out in a dog bed made from a vintage suitcase. Wherever I am, he is, and vice versa.

IMG_0740

2. When did you start the Maggie & Mae brand? Maggie & Mae has been an “idea” for many years. I got my start at a small boutique on Nantucket, where I was the manager/buyer for about 10 years. We started the process in October of 2013, and officially opened for business in August of 2014.

3. Who are Maggie & Mae?
Maggie was my beloved Golden Retriever, I got her ask a gift from my dad when I was 8.  She passed away when I was a senior in high school. Mae is for Asha Mae, my littlest sister. I am the oldest of three girls; Asha Mae is in the first grade at Jerry Thomas Elementary. We are the luckiest people on the planet to get to share our lives with her.

4. What do you find most challenging about running your own business?
The most challenging thing about running my own business is that I am my own boss, on any given day I can choose to be lazy or productive; and I’m the only person that I have to answer to. Can be a double-edged sword at times.

IMG_1994

5. What is the most rewarding thing about running your company? To me, I find the most reward in empowering women through their style and wardrobe. I like the feeling of helping someone feel pretty and dressing for their personal style and body types. We as women are naturally super hard on ourselves, so it is nice to be able to help someone calm that down a bit.

6. What do you do on your days off?
Well, as a new business owner, days off are few and far between; but when we do get them, my husband Justin and I enjoy taking my parents boat out, or going to the beach. We love just the act of sitting and relaxing.  Jupiter has so much to offer in such a little area, we try to take advantage of our little slice of paradise.

7. How do you juggle work & family?
The juggle of work and family is always tough, for anyone and everyone. I think for me, I have to remind myself of the importance of taking a step back and remembering that we only get this one life; don’t let it pass you by.

8. Who is your favorite Superhero and why?
My favorite super hero is hands down, my mother. She is more than the hardest working person I know. It was always her dream to see my sister and I go off to college and do great things. Not only was it her dream to see it, but also she is always there to help us get it. Without sounding like a spoiled brat, my mom’s never wanted to tell us “no.” If there was something we wanted or needed, she’d work extra hard just for us. It’s pretty cool to have a mother that has your back no matter what; not everyone will have the blessing of experiencing that.

9. Where can we find Maggie & Mae online? Maggie & Mae is super into the social media train, you can always find us on Facebook and Instagram. I’m constantly posting about new arrivals, specials, and everything in between!

Thank you, Caitlin, for sharing with us! We love seeing small business owners doing well in Jupiter, Florida!

Just listed: I love this Spacious & Bright Jupiter Townhome, within walking distance of Maggie & Mae, currently available through the Sean Underwood Real Estate Team. Contact me if you’d like to see it.
